Names and Distribution:
Caucasian Walnut (Juglans regia) grows in the mountainous regions of the Caucasus as well as parts of Southeastern Europe and Western Asia. Some of the finest timber originates from Georgia, Armenia, and the surrounding regions. Due to its exceptional grain, warm coloration, and limited availability, Caucasian Walnut is regarded as one of Europe's most exclusive hardwoods and is highly valued for premium furniture making and high-end interior design.
Imperance:
Sapwood and heartwood are clearly distinguishable in color. The heartwood displays a wide range of shades, from light gray and honey brown to rich dark brown, often featuring olive, violet, or black streaks. Characteristic features include its lively grain, decorative cathedral and striped figures, and occasionally curly or flamed patterns. The pores are medium-sized and evenly distributed. Caucasian Walnut is considered one of the most decorative hardwoods and is especially prized for its distinctive figure and natural beauty.
Natural wood characteristics may include: knots, color variations, cracks, wormholes, occasional bark inclusions and ingrown grain, as well as natural bowing or warping of the slab.
Properties:
The density at 12% moisture content is approximately 620–680 kg/m³ (0.62–0.68 t/m³). The wood exhibits low to moderate shrinkage and offers excellent dimensional stability. It machines exceptionally well and is easy to saw, plane, mill, sand, turn, and glue. Its fine texture produces outstanding surface finishes that are well suited for oiling, waxing, staining, or lacquering.
The Brinell hardness is approximately 32–35 N/mm², while the modulus of elasticity (MOE) is around 11,000–12,500 N/mm².
Uses:
Classic interior wood, gunstocks, furniture making specially Table Tops, musical instruments, woodturning and carving work.
