Beech (Fagus sylvatica), also known as European beech, is one of the most important and widely distributed hardwood species in Europe. It grows predominantly in Central Europe and is of major economic importance. Beech wood has been valued for centuries due to its strength, uniform texture, and wide range of applications.
Appearance
Sapwood and heartwood show only slight color differences. The wood features a light yellowish-white to pale reddish-brown coloration with a fine and uniform texture. Characteristic features include its calm grain pattern and the fine ray flecks visible on radial surfaces. Steamed beech develops a warmer reddish-brown tone.
Natural wood characteristics such as knots, slight color variations, tension cracks, or minor structural irregularities may occur and emphasize the natural character of the material.
Properties
Beech wood is characterized by high strength, hardness, and excellent load-bearing capacity. It has a dense and uniform structure and can be processed, milled, sanded, turned, and glued very well. Due to its high-quality surface finish, beech is particularly suitable for premium furniture and interior construction applications. The density at u=12% moisture content is approximately 0.68–0.75 t/m³. The wood shows moderate shrinkage behavior and should be properly dried and processed. The Brinell hardness is approximately 34–41 N/mm², while the modulus of elasticity is around 14,000 N/mm².
Applications
Beech is a versatile wood widely used for furniture making, interior construction, staircases, doors, parquet and plank flooring, kitchen worktops, turned objects, toys, and high-quality wood joinery. Due to its high strength and excellent workability, beech is used in both traditional craftsmanship and industrial manufacturing.
